StoneLite® FAQ: Your Guide to Lightweight Natural Panels

July 21, 2025

Natural stone is a timeless material, but its weight, installation demands, and structural requirements can create major design and construction challenges.

That’s where StoneLite® comes in – a lightweight natural stone panel system that delivers the beauty of dimensional stone with significantly improved performance and flexibility.

For nearly 50 years, architects, engineers, and builders have relied on StoneLite® to simplify installation, reduce structural load, and expand design possibilities. Whether you’re working on a facade, ceiling, or renovation project, StoneLite® offers a smarter solution.

In this blog, we’re answering the top questions we hear about StoneLite® to help you better understand its capabilities and benefits.

1. What is StoneLite®

StoneLite® is a lightweight natural stone composite panel. It combines a thin veneer of natural stone with an aluminum honeycomb backing—delivering the aesthetics of dimensional stone with a fraction of the weight and faster installation.

2. What testing and certifications do StoneLite® panels have?

For nearly five decades, StoneLite® panels have been rigorously tested and trusted in real-world applications. Our products meet or exceed international building code requirements and are certified by:

  • Certified by ICC, CSTB and Miami Dade NOA
  • Acid Freeze-Thaw
  • Air and Water Infiltration
  • Structural and Impact Load
  • Fire Testing
  • Full Scale Arena Blast Test
  • Attachment System Testing

3. What types of natural stone are available for StoneLite® panels?

We offer a wide selection of stone types, including granite, limestone, marble, travertine, sandstone, and quartzite – each carefully selected and fabricated to meet your project’s design intent and performance needs.

4. What finishes are available for StoneLite® panels?

Finishes include honed, polished, brushed, sandblasted, and more, depending on stone type and project goals. We can advise on finish selection to achieve both aesthetic and functional outcomes.

5. Can StoneLite® panels be used for both interior and exterior applications?

Yes. StoneLite® panels are engineered for use in both interior and exterior environments – ideal for facades, soffits, ceilings, feature walls, lobbies, and more.

6. How are StoneLite® panels manufactured?

The manufacturing process involves bonding a thin natural stone veneer to an aluminum honeycomb core using high-strength adhesives, creating a durable and lightweight panel. StoneLite® panels are stronger and more flexible than traditional dimensional stone. Impact strength 60x greater than 3cm stone.

  • Ideal in regions prone to hurricanes and earthquakes.
  • Dependence on stone for load-bearing purposes becomes inconsequential.

7. How do StoneLite® panels compare to traditional solid stone in terms of weight?

StoneLite® panels are up to 80% lighter than 3cm dimensional stone, averaging just 4–6 lbs/sq. ft. compared to 20–30 lbs/sq. ft. This significant weight reduction can lead to:

  • Smaller structural support requirements
  • Lower steel and concrete usage
  • Reduced transportation and installation costs

8. How are StoneLite® panels installed?

Panels are typically installed using mechanical anchors or adhesive systems, depending on the application and substrate. Benefits include:

  • No crane time required
  • Reduced labor and staging needs
  • Fewer field cuts
  • Can be installed over existing cladding—minimizing demolition, cost, and waste

Detailed installation guidelines are provided for each project.

9. Are StoneLite® panels environmentally friendly?

Yes – as a lightweight natural stone panel system, StoneLite® contributes to more sustainable building practices by reducing material use and installation impact.

We prioritize sustainability through clean and efficient production methods. Our innovative process uses only half the stone and natural resources compared to traditional methods, significantly reducing our environmental impact. Additionally, we incorporate recycled aluminum and water throughout our entire plant to ensure a greener, more sustainable operation.

10. Can StoneLite® panels be customized for specific architectural designs?

We offer unparalleled customization and design flexibility, allowing you to select from a wide range of stone options. Our expertise in modularization minimizes waste and ensures efficient use of natural stone. Whether it’s architectural features like cornices or finished returns, we are dedicated to helping you bring your vision to life with precision and creativity.
