Cremation rates continue to rise across the country, creating an ongoing need for cemeteries to offer meaningful and flexible memorialization options. Woodlawn Cemetery in Green Bay, Wisconsin, recognized this shift and saw an opportunity to provide families with a new choice. The cemetery wanted to expand its offerings by creating an above ground cremation option that provided a peaceful and comforting environment. Drawing on years of experience in the death care profession, Woodlawn’s leadership understood how intentional design and natural beauty can help families feel at ease while creating a lasting and meaningful tribute to those they love. After visiting many cemeteries across the country, they hoped to bring that same sense of serenity to their own community.

The vision for the project first took shape as a simple hand drawn sketch, but it quickly grew into something much larger. Woodlawn hoped to create a space that felt distinctive rather than relying on a standard rectangular unit. Working together with their Board of Trustees, a local landscape architecture firm, and Coldspring, they refined the concept into a thoughtful and cohesive design. Semicircular columbarium units became the foundation of the plan, forming a layout that felt open and connected to the surrounding grounds. Carnelian® granite was selected to match an existing columbarium on site, providing continuity and a warm, timeless appearance.

The design process required many discussions and revisions. Every detail, including granite selection, sizing, and landscaping elements, was reviewed carefully by all partners involved. Coldspring supported the team through each stage and helped refine the design so it aligned with Woodlawn’s long-term vision. While the process was at times complex, everyone remained committed to creating a space that felt special and intentional.

The completed columbarium garden became one of the most distinctive cremation memorial areas in the region. At the time of installation, it was the largest and most unique project of its kind north of Milwaukee. The combination of the semicircular layout, the thoughtful landscaping, and the warm Carnelian granite created a peaceful and welcoming environment where families could gather, reflect, and remember their loved ones. Families responded immediately and positively, often sharing how calm and peaceful they felt while visiting and how beautiful the space looked.

Since installation, Woodlawn has more than doubled its niche sales. The garden has met its purpose by providing a meaningful and long-lasting place of remembrance. Woodlawn shared that their goal was to offer families a beautiful and comfortable space that honored their loved ones, and they believe the project achieved that and more. Through thoughtful collaboration and a shared commitment to creating something meaningful, Woodlawn Cemetery now offers a serene memorial setting that will serve families for generations to come.
